Re: Jeep Jamboree

We have been on the Ouray Jeep Jamboree. Only complaint was that an early snow closed the Ophir Pass trail. Spectacular scenery. Try to plan to spend a few extra days in the area. Visit Silverton & Animas Forks. Maybe even ride the train from Durango. Get a guide book. Many trails are easy enough to go alone as long as not closed by snow. Ouray has a big hot spring fed swimming pool. Also gold mine tour. Yeah, we really like the area & have gone back a few times. Expect cold weather, especially in the mornings.

More Ouray: Take the walk up to the waterfall, think it is called Box Canyon. Depending on how you are going or coming, stop at Black Canyon of the Gunnison, or Mesa Verde. When you want to go back, like next summer, post up & see how many can join you. Please assure your travelling partner that both Jeep Jamboree & the town of Ouray are family friendly. Take a tow strap, but don't expect to need it.
Send any questions you might have.

mule: I found some pictures. Let me know if you & your travelling partner want to get together over a pot of coffee. My favorite passenger would be glad to talk more about the trails around Ouray.

Re: Jeep Jamboree

How's this for a late reply? The last few times I have tried to log on I have been unable to access the site??? For some reason it let me tonight, so I'm back!

First off, the trip was pretty amazing. We ended up extending the trip and making the extra hour and a half drive to Moab after the Jamboree in Ouray.

The wheeling in Ouray was moderate to say the least. That was until I made a wrong turn. We went a couple days early to do some trails on our own. We were having a great time and not finding anything that was making the Jeep sweat. I turned around a bend and there was Bob Arnett. If you have never heard of him before he is a 70+ year old man tromping around Colorado in a fully restored 1963 Willys sitting on 37's with a Chevy 350 under the hood. They call him "the legend". Really nice guy. He was with 3 other Jeeps and invited us along with his group for the day. We headed down the Poughkipsee Trail. There is one portion that only he made and ended up strapping us all up. It was the highlight of the Colorado portion of the trip. The Jamboree was a great time, good food, and met a lot of great people. If you are looking for crazy wheeling, you might be a little disappointed. But being that it was fall, the views/colors of the mountains were amazing and made it very worthwhile.
After the JJ we headed to Moab. We did Top of the World, Hell's Revenge and Fins N Things. I dont think I have had a smile plastered to my face for 3 days straight like that before. I've always wanted to do a trip like this (we have a hard time taking vacation), and I am glad we made ourselves go. We are now planning on going back in April to the Arch Canyon JJ.

Mule:
Glad to see you had a Good trip. Arch Canyon is also a good trip. The drive up the creek to the Arches is also moderate. But the other day, Hotel Rock, will require your full concentration. I did this trip with a group from MHJC. No strap or winches but spotters got a good work-out.
If you have a day to spare, try the Colorado River Overlook trail that starts from the Visitor Center in Canyonlands Park. Well worth the effort & better than the guide book description. Elephant Hill also goes out to a great overlook, but better done with 2 other Jeeps.
